My name is Lien Uten, 24 years old and from Belgium. I studied biochemical engineering, but never really worked with the diploma. I started travelling instead, first to Asia and now I am on working holiday in Australia since September 2017.
Whilst travelling in Asia I started my own non-profit, Fair and Square (, @fairandsquarebe) to help support an Indian NGO Samugam. Fair and Square is a social enterprise with two main focuses: ethics and sustainability. We work with marginalised gipsy women who make personalised tote and string bags for us in India and sell them to in Europe. Besides that, we have a webshop where we sell products (reusable bags, bamboo straws and drinking bottles) that help people to avoid single-use plastics. I run this non-profit voluntarily, giving all my profit from sales to Samugam.
Currently, I’m starting my own small surf label, this time to be able to travel and work at the same time. The products will be made in the same tailor shop as where I make the bags for Fair and Square, so another social enterprise where I will focus on ethical production and using sustainable materials. In short, stay-on surf wear with respect for people and planet. I forecast to launch in January 2019.
In my free time, I have one passion: surfing. I’ve been surfing since I was 14, snowboarding since I was 10 and did my advanced open water PADI for diving in Thailand. I’m a vegan, passionate about the climate and try to live a minimalistic lifestyle. My mother tongue is Dutch, but I also speak English, Spanish and French.
